Winston Rodney took his nom de guerre "Burning Spear" from Yomo Kenyatta,
the Kenyan freedom fighter and independence hero. Like few other reggae
musicians, Burning Spear has always been about a political message.
For many years, Burning Spear did not have one love song. His message
is that of Jamaican Black consciousness leader Marcus Garvey and of
Rastafarianism. Like Bob Marley, Burning Spear comes from the rural
parish of St. Anne. He is like the image of the "African Teacher" that
he evokes in one of his songs. Burning Spear's music is about building
consciousness.
